Getting The Right Wire Cable Grips for the Job

Wire cable grips - sometimes called cable stockings or cable socks - provide an efficient method of supporting and pulling cables. They are widely used for installation and maintenance work on wire rope, wire cable, electrical and power cables, overhead lines, hydraulic pipes, telephone and fibre optic cables.

Wire cable grips are re-usable tools (subject to inspection before re-use) and are not confined to cable applications but basically can be used to support or pull any cylindrical object within their grip and load carrying capacity.

They are manufactured from high quality galvanized steel wire although stainless steel can also be woven and are recommended for use in corrosive environments.

The weaving process leaves no loose or frayed wires at the tail end to cause potential damage to the cable or the conduit while the length of grips can also be customised according to individual requirements.

Factors such as the diameter of the grip and the tension applied through hauling all contribute towards determining the effective safety of the grip. Stress, misuse and wear and tear will affect the safe working load of the grips. Changing grips sooner rather than later is also recommended.

Following are the standard types of Wire Cable Grips and their cable applications:

1. Closed Tubular Single Eye CLP Code: TCG
This is used for light to medium hauling of communication and power cable. To be used in underground conduits, trenches, cabling trays and for service lines to factories.

2. Open Tubular Double Eye CLP Code: DCG
Ideally suited for the mining industry where cable needs to be laid and secured to the walls of shafts and tunnels.
NB The effective strength of the grip is halved when hauling with only one eye.

3. Open Tubular Offset Eye CLP Code: OCG
These are used for pulling slack during final placement of cable in exchange buildings and at termination points such as pole tops where the end of the cable cannot be used to haul from.

4. Lace-up Double Eye CLP Code: LCG
Generally used for supporting electricity cable in a vertical or sloping position and is also ideal for use in manholes where the longitudinal movement of the cable caused by road vibration needs to be checked.

Getting the right Wire Cable Grips for your project will help reduce cable strain and make life and work easier, safer and more productive. As safety is a big issue when it comes to anything to do with wire cables being used either underground or overhead it makes sense to get superior products that will go the distance.
